29TH SEASON OF CANDLELIGHT CONCERTS TO FEATURE
WOMEN COMPOSERS, MUSIC OF HENRY VIII,
SCOTTISH BAROQUE

Continuing a twenty-nine year tradition of presenting fine early music concerts, the highly regarded Chamber Music by Candlelight series, sponsored by the Cambridge Society for Early Music, will once again bring three internationally-recognized groups to perform in Weston. The season will kick off on Friday, October 23, 2009, at 8:00 PM with La Donna Musicale, a vocal and instrumental ensemble dedicated to the re-discovery of long-hidden works by women composers from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Led by 2009 Radcliffe Institute Fellow Laury Gutiérrez, they will perform passionate opera arias and expressive chamber music by three little-known Venetian women: Anna Bon, Antonia Bembo, and Barbara Strozzi.

The series continues with the Carthage Consort of Viols on Friday, January 15, 2010, at 8:00 PM featuring music from the time of Henry VIII. Haunting chansons and elegant polyphony from the Renaissance English court will be brought to life by the ravishing, other-wordly sounds of three viols in consort.

Bringing the season to a rousing close will be baroque flutist Chris Norman and violinist David Greenberg on Friday, February 26, 2010, at 8:00 PM. From bannocks to Bach, refined to rollicking, this lively program of music from Scotland and maritime Canada promises to be a delight for the whole family.

All concerts will take place at the Congregational Church of Weston, UCC, 130 Newton Street, Weston.

The church is handicapped-accessible and there is plenty of free parking. Admission is $30 for general admission, $25 for seniors. Subscriptions to all three programs in the series are also available for $70, a significant discount. Parents and educators will want to take special note that all students with ID and all children 17 years and under are admitted free.
